Designing homes for Jaipur summers
How orientation, shading and materials keep a home cool, and what to look for when you buy.

Jaipur's summers are long and intense. Good design can make a home noticeably cooler and reduce electricity bills, without sacrificing light.
Orientation comes first
Living spaces facing north and east get soft light with less heat. West-facing glass takes the harshest afternoon sun. When we plan a project, we place bedrooms and living rooms away from the west wherever we can.
Shade the openings
Deep balconies, overhangs and screens stop the sun before it reaches the glass. Jaipur's traditional jaali screens do exactly this while letting breezes through, and modern versions work just as well on today's facades.
Let the air move
A home with windows on two or three sides can flush out hot air in the evening. Look for layouts where you can open windows on opposite walls.
Materials that help
- AAC blocks insulate better than traditional bricks.
- Light-coloured exterior finishes reflect heat.
- Roof insulation and terrace gardens keep top floors cooler.
- Double-glazed or tinted glass for large west and south windows.
Green spaces matter
Trees and lawns lower the temperature around a building. Terrace gardens and rooftop lawns, like those in our Krishnam Kothi homes, help keep the floors below cooler.
When you buy, ask
- Which direction do the main rooms face?
- How deep are the balconies?
- What insulation is used in the walls and roof?
A cooler home is a more comfortable home. See how we design across our projects.
